What Is Craft Beer?


It’s important to define terms, so that’s what the first section of Beers To You does.  Craft is the term that is thrown around without a whole lot of attention to what it means, technically or legally, and both of those realms are different in different places.  Let’s see what exactly “craft beer” means in the US, as well as what you should call those other beers that you like to use the word for.  We’ll compare with other major players in the beer world, like the UK and (gasp) China.

Drink along?  It’s your choice for this one, but try to find a craft beer.  We’ll see if you know what you’re doing!

Lo más importante es tener los términos claros, por eso lo hacemos en la primera sesión de Beers To You. La palabra artesana aparece en muchos contextos, y en muchos casos se presta poca atención a su definición técnica o legal, y estas definiciones son diferentes en distintos lugares además.  Veremos qué significa exactamente “cerveza artesana” en USA, también los términos correctos para las otras cervezas que suelen colocarse bajo esta palabra.  Compararemos la situación con otras industrias en el mundo de cerveza, como Reino Unido y China.  China?!  Sí, China.

Beber con la presentación?  Tú eliges, pero intenta encontrar una artesana.  Ya veremos si sabes qué buscar.

Beer In Spain - The 20th Century

Industrial brewing has left Spain with more or less the same tastes as the rest of Western Europe, and the same process of whittling down the multitude of brewers has happened.  The country is supplied by a handful of breweries, which do their best to achieve national distribution, although that doesn’t quite happen in the early decades of the 20th century.  Beer becomes an interesting tool of propaganda during the Civil War.  For much of the century the Franco government’s protectionism allows Spanish beers to flourish at home, although it leaves them vulnerable later on.  Eventually, foreign investors take an interest in the market and national breweries join with international ones. Beer In Spain - In The Old Days

A quick rundown of beer events over quite a few centuries...since most of those centuries just don’t have that much beer.  A pre-Roman surprise, some climate factors, and a less than triumphant return of brewing to the peninsula.  We see the run-up to the Industrial Revolution and the slow but more-or-less steady rise in popularity of beer, especially from the north.  If you're familiar with attitudes in other European countries, you might be surprised by what people in Spain thought of beer during the time.
