Prohibition


It’s one of the most iconic moments in US history, a colorful mix of ingenuity, criminality, ethics, and parties.  It’s easy to think of the 18th Amendment as something that was imposed on the people by an overly protective nanny state, but those of us who pay attention know that that is rarely how things actually work.  So, what were the factors that caused Prohibition to come into being?  Was there really a component of concern for the health and welfare of Americans, or was it just about money, as so many things are?  How did breweries manage to survive a closure of more than a decade, when we fear business can’t survive two weeks without constant massaging now?  What finally caused Congress to reverse course and strike down the ban on recreational alcohol, and what was the landscape like for the breweries that were ready and raring to get back into their beers?

Drink along?  Non-alcoholic beer for authenticity, or super sweet cocktails.  If you’re dead-set on beer, get something from a local brewery, or perhaps Senador Volstead.


La era de la Ley Seca es uno de los momentos más icónicos en la historia de USA, una mezcla revoltosa de innovación, criminalidad, ética, y fiesta.  Es sencillo pensar que esta Enmienda fue algo impuesto en el pueblo por un estado sobreprotector, pero la gente que presta atención sabe que las cosas raramente funcionan así.  Entonces, cuáles eran los factores que provocaron la aprobación de la Ley Seca?  Existía de verdad un componente de preocupación por la salud y bienestar del pueblo americano, o era solo cuestión de dinero, como tantas otras cosas?  Cómo llegaron a sobrevivir las cervecerías durante más de una década fuera de servicio, cuando ahora tememos por la supervivencia del mundo de negocio durante dos semanas sin ayudas constantes?  

Beber con la presentación? Cerveza sin para la autenticidad, o cocteles muy dulces.  Si no puedes sin cerveza de verdad, consigue algo de una cervecería/fábrica local, o quizás Senador Volstead.

Beer In Spain - The 20th Century

Industrial brewing has left Spain with more or less the same tastes as the rest of Western Europe, and the same process of whittling down the multitude of brewers has happened.  The country is supplied by a handful of breweries, which do their best to achieve national distribution, although that doesn’t quite happen in the early decades of the 20th century.  Beer becomes an interesting tool of propaganda during the Civil War.  For much of the century the Franco government’s protectionism allows Spanish beers to flourish at home, although it leaves them vulnerable later on.  Eventually, foreign investors take an interest in the market and national breweries join with international ones. Beer In Spain - In The Old Days

A quick rundown of beer events over quite a few centuries...since most of those centuries just don’t have that much beer.  A pre-Roman surprise, some climate factors, and a less than triumphant return of brewing to the peninsula.  We see the run-up to the Industrial Revolution and the slow but more-or-less steady rise in popularity of beer, especially from the north.  If you're familiar with attitudes in other European countries, you might be surprised by what people in Spain thought of beer during the time.
