Colonial Drink


There is a bit of confusion in our vision of colonists in North America and their general view on life.  As far as alcohol is concerned, they were damn happy for it.  Not only beer, although that was one of the most drunk beverages, but cider, rum, wine, and mixed drinks were quite popular.  Certainly not everybody could drink the fanciest drinks every day, but they were definitely drinking a lot more and a lot more variety than most of us in the 21st century.  Let’s check out tastes, attitudes, and social changes from the time before the US existed.

Drink along?  English style ale, porter, or small beer (session ales can substitute).  The daring might try spruce beer, ginger beer or real pumpkin ale.  For something different try a cider.


Existe un poco de confusión en nuestra imagen de los colonos en Norteamérica y su visión general de la vida.  En cuanto al alcohol, en realidad estaban bastante agradecidos de tenerlo.  Y no solo la cerveza, aunque era una de las bebidas más consumidas, sino también sidra, ron, vino, y varios tipos de cócteles.  Claro está que no todos podían beber de lo más elegante todos los días, pero lo cierto es que bebían mucho  más y con mucha más variedad que la mayoría de nosotros en el siglo XXI.  Examinaremos gustos, actitudes, y cambios sociales de la era antes de USA.

Beber con la presentación?  Ale inglesa, porter o “small beer” (también session ale).  Los más atrevidos pueden buscar cerveza de abeto, de jengibre, o ale de calabaza.  Para algo distinto a la cerveza, sidra.

Beer In Spain - The 20th Century

Industrial brewing has left Spain with more or less the same tastes as the rest of Western Europe, and the same process of whittling down the multitude of brewers has happened.  The country is supplied by a handful of breweries, which do their best to achieve national distribution, although that doesn’t quite happen in the early decades of the 20th century.  Beer becomes an interesting tool of propaganda during the Civil War.  For much of the century the Franco government’s protectionism allows Spanish beers to flourish at home, although it leaves them vulnerable later on.  Eventually, foreign investors take an interest in the market and national breweries join with international ones. Drink along?  More lager and more pilsner.  Icy cold and in a tiny glass, if you can. Beer In Spain - In The Old Days

A quick rundown of beer events over quite a few centuries...since most of those centuries just don’t have that much beer.  A pre-Roman surprise, some climate factors, and a less than triumphant return of brewing to the peninsula.  We see the run-up to the Industrial Revolution and the slow but more-or-less steady rise in popularity of beer, especially from the north.  If you're familiar with attitudes in other European countries, you might be surprised by what people in Spain thought of beer during the time.
